A long-term dream at Oasis has been to create the opportunity for young people to work alongside our intellectually disabled workers to ultimately increase productivity amongst the workers, provide secondary supervision, and most importantly to offer companionship.
Our dream was finally realised in 2019, thanks to the Allan Gray Orbis Foundation Endowment. As part of their 10KJ project, they agreed to fund Oasis to create a 12-month internship programme for non-intellectually disabled, unemployed youth to become Companion Workers to assist in programme delivery and oversight.
The programme was designed to develop the interns’ work and life skills capabilities. This mentorship programme will continue until the end of 2022.
The internship consists of internal and external courses, including First Aid, health and safety, fire safety, drug awareness and HIV/AIDS. The interns also train and work in several Oasis departments including baking, gardening, cleaning, vehicle washing, office administration, stock processing for shops, and procurement.
